Santa Maria Cabinet FAQ

What cabinets cost here, when a permit is actually needed, which licence a cabinet contractor must hold, how much deposit is legal, whether refacing is worth it, and what the boxes should be made of. Answers first, sources named.

How much do custom cabinets cost in Santa Maria, CA?

Budget $500 to $1,200 per linear foot for true custom cabinets in California, which is the statewide range published by cabinet makers including Ronbow. Thumbtack's national project data puts a typical custom cabinet project at $1,447 to $5,294 with an average of $2,817, and a low and high of $552 and $13,423, because that figure counts small jobs as well as whole kitchens. Central Coast labour sits below Los Angeles and Bay Area rates, so Santa Maria quotes usually land in the lower half of the California band. The only number that matters is the one written after somebody measures your room.

What does a full kitchen of cabinets cost by material?

Solid hardwood runs $5,000 to $25,000 for a standard kitchen, wood veneer $1,900 to $13,000, and laminate $4,000 to $15,000, according to Thumbtack's cost data. The spread inside each material is mostly cabinet count and door complexity, not the species itself. Maple, cherry, oak and pine all sit inside that hardwood band. If a quote for a standard kitchen comes in under the bottom of these ranges, ask what the boxes are made of before you celebrate.

What is the difference between custom, semi custom and stock cabinets?

The difference is who decides the dimensions. Stock cabinets come in fixed widths, usually 3 inch increments, and you fill the leftover space with filler strips. Semi custom starts from a stock catalogue and lets you change sizes, finishes and some interior fittings. Custom is built to your measurements with no catalogue at all. Installed per cabinet, Thumbtack puts stock at $75 to $400, semi custom at $150 to $900, and custom at $500 to $1,400.

Do I need a permit to replace kitchen cabinets in Santa Maria?

Usually no, because the California Residential Code lists "painting, papering, tiling, carpeting, cabinets, counter tops and similar finish work" as work exempt from permit under Section R105.2. Swapping cabinets into the same footprint is finish work. The moment the job moves a sink, relocates gas, or adds or moves circuits and outlets, you are into plumbing, mechanical and electrical work that needs a permit. Local jurisdictions can amend the exempt list, so confirm your specific job with the City of Santa Maria Building Division, or with Santa Barbara County Planning and Development if you are in Orcutt or another unincorporated area.

Does a cabinet maker need a licence in California?

Yes, for any cabinet job of real size. California Business and Professions Code section 7048 exempts work only where "the aggregate contract price for labor, materials, and all other items is less than one thousand dollars ($1,000)", the work is of a casual, minor or inconsequential nature, and it does not require a building permit. A kitchen of cabinets is far past $1,000, so the contractor needs a licence. The specialty classification is C-6, Cabinet, Millwork and Finish Carpentry, and you can check any licence number free on the CSLB register.

Is cabinet refacing cheaper than replacing cabinets?

Yes, by a wide margin, as long as your existing boxes are sound. Laminate refacing in Santa Maria runs $1,525 to $2,391 for a standard 12 cabinet kitchen according to homeyou's cost model for this city, which works out to about $127 to $199 per cabinet. Wood veneer refacing is estimated at $2,000 to $6,000 for the same kitchen. Compare that against $500 to $1,400 per cabinet installed for custom replacement and the maths is obvious. The catch is that refacing keeps your current layout, your current box sizes and your current interior condition.

When is refacing the wrong choice?

Reface only if the boxes are square, dry and structurally sound, and you are happy with the layout. If the particleboard under the sink has swelled from a leak, if face frames are racked or separating, if the layout itself is the problem, or if you want to change cabinet sizes or add an island, refacing spends real money without fixing anything. A new door on a failing box is still a failing box.

How long does a custom cabinet project take?

Ask for dates in writing, because honest lead times vary by shop and by season and no published figure covers the Santa Maria market. What the schedule is made of is consistent: a field measure after demolition or after existing cabinets come out, shop time to build the boxes and doors, finish and cure time, then installation and a punch list. Any contractor who will not put an approximate start date and completion date on the contract is a contractor to walk away from, and California requires those dates on a home improvement contract anyway.

What does California require in a cabinet contract?

A written contract, signed before work starts, for any home improvement job over $500. Business and Professions Code section 7159 applies where the aggregate contract price "exceeds five hundred dollars ($500)" and requires the contract and every change order to be in writing and signed before that work begins. It also requires a Mechanics Lien Warning and approximate start and completion dates.

How much of a deposit can a cabinet contractor ask for?

No more than $1,000 or 10 percent of the contract amount, whichever is less. Business and Professions Code section 7159.5 states that "the downpayment shall not exceed one thousand dollars ($1,000) or 10 percent of the contract amount, whichever amount is less." After that downpayment, the same section says a contractor "shall neither request nor accept payment that exceeds the value of the work performed or material delivered." On a $30,000 kitchen the legal deposit is $1,000, not $10,000. A contractor asking for half up front is asking you to break the rule that protects you.

Can I cancel a cabinet contract after I sign it?

Usually yes, within three business days, but the window depends on where you signed. The statutory Three Day Right to Cancel notice reads: "You, the buyer, have the right to cancel this contract within three business days. You may cancel by emailing, mailing, faxing, or delivering a written notice to the contractor at the contractor's place of business by midnight of the third business day after you received a signed and dated copy of the contract that includes this notice." Seniors get a Five Day Right to Cancel instead. If you cancel, the contractor must return anything you paid within 10 days of receiving the notice. Important exception: the notice is not required when the contract is "negotiated at the contractor's place of business", so a contract signed in a showroom may carry no cancellation window at all.

Are new cabinets safe? What about formaldehyde?

Look for the TSCA Title VI compliance label on any composite wood in the cabinet. Hardwood plywood, medium density fibreboard and particleboard, and finished goods containing them such as cabinets, are covered by the EPA's formaldehyde emission standards under Title VI of the Toxic Substances Control Act, and since 22 March 2019 those products must be labelled as TSCA Title VI compliant by an EPA recognised third party certifier. The federal limits match California's own CARB Airborne Toxic Control Measure Phase 2 limits, which have applied in this state since 2009. Solid wood is not a composite panel and is not regulated the same way.

What are cabinet boxes actually made of?

Most cabinet boxes are sheet goods, not solid lumber, and that is normal rather than a shortcut. Plywood boxes are the durable choice: multi ply construction holds a screw, resists racking, and copes better with a slow leak under a sink. Particleboard and MDF are flatter and cheaper and take a laminate or painted finish beautifully, but they swell permanently once water gets in. Solid wood is normally reserved for face frames, door frames and drawer fronts, where movement is manageable. Ask which material the boxes are, not just what the doors are.

What cabinet door style should I choose?

Shaker is the safe default and raised panel is the traditional one, and the practical difference is cleaning and cost. A shaker door is a flat centre panel in a square edged frame, which suits most Santa Maria housing stock and hides nothing. A raised panel door has a profiled centre and profiled frame edges, which reads more formal and collects more dust in the profiles. Slab doors are flat with no frame at all, cheapest to make and most modern looking. Frame width, profile and overlay change the price more than the name of the style does.

What does cabinet hardware add to the cost?

Hardware is a small line that people forget until the quote arrives. Concealed soft close hinges and full extension soft close drawer slides are the two upgrades worth paying for, because they are the parts you touch every day and the parts that fail first on cheap cabinets. Pulls and knobs range from a few dollars to well over thirty each, and a kitchen can easily need thirty of them. Ask whether hinges, slides and pulls are included in the quoted price or listed as an allowance.

What else gets added to a cabinet quote?

Crown moulding, finished ends and old cabinet removal are the three line items that surprise people. Thumbtack puts crown moulding at about $70 per 8 foot section, finished ends on exposed cabinets at $100 to $200 each, and removing existing cabinets at around $300. Installation of the boxes themselves runs about $100 per cabinet box on top of the cabinets. None of these are padding, but all of them belong on the written quote rather than on the final invoice.

Do you serve Orcutt, Nipomo, Lompoc and Guadalupe?

Yes, the service area is Santa Maria plus the surrounding valley towns. That covers Orcutt and Sisquoc in unincorporated Santa Barbara County, the City of Guadalupe out toward the coast, Los Alamos and Lompoc to the south, and Nipomo just north across the Santa Maria River in San Luis Obispo County. Nipomo being in a different county matters for permits, not for the cabinets.

How do I check a contractor before I hire them?

Run the licence number on the CSLB register before you sign anything, not after. The Check a Licence tool is free, takes under a minute, and shows the classification, the expiry date, the bond and any disciplinary history. Confirm the classification is C-6 or a B General Building licence. CSLB also publishes guidance on the risks of hiring unlicensed help, including the fact that you can be left carrying liability for injuries on your own property.
